Woman arrested for OWI after colliding with patrol car

Driving under the influence is never a good choice, especially if the driver is under 21. Unfortunately, lapses in judgment do occur and the result is often an OWI charge. One young woman was arrested for impaired driving after she struck a Michigan State Police trooper's patrol car.

The 19-year-old was allegedly pulled over around 1:30 a.m. for a traffic violation. She initially stopped on the left-hand side of the road where there was no shoulder. The officer said that he asked her to wait for traffic to pass and then follow him to the right shoulder. He also says he asked her to pull her car in front of his patrol car.

Allegedly, the defendant hit the back of the patrol car while attempting to maneuver her vehicle in front of the officer's car as he had asked. The officer claimed that he could smell alcohol on the defendant when he arrested her. When the driver's blood alcohol content was measured later, it was allegedly twice the legal limit.

Underage drinking is, unfortunately, not an uncommon occurrence, and circumstances can be made much worse when a vehicle is involved. Fortunately, in this case, no one was hurt. Michigan residents who have been charged with an OWI may benefit from speaking with an attorney. A lawyer may then be able to assist his or her client in building a strong defense. The defense built by the attorney and his or her client may then be used to, hopefully, achieve most favorable result possible for the defendant.
